Success Story - Abhishek Kapoor "KAI PO CHE"

“Never give up control. Live life on your own terms. Right from the start, it’s a death sentence. But until then, who’s in charge? Me. That’s how I live my life.”

Before giving my review on KAI PO CHE!, Let me share with you a very interesting struggle story of Abhishek kapoor (Director of KAI PO CHE!) a man who lived up his dream on his own terms. Like the main three protagonist of KAI PO CHE!, Abhishek kapoor's career graph is also full of ups & downs making it a memorable roller coaster ride. Abhishek (aka as gattu) was born with a silver spoon in mouth. In his early childhood he got an opportunity to study in posh schools sharing his academic career with some of the very well-known star kids (farhan akhtar, Abhishek bachchan, twinkle khanna, tushar kapoor few many). But the time never remains same, by the time gattu completed his academic career, that silver spoon was turned to bronze now. It was a time for gattu now to take the responsibilities of family on his shoulders. Living to his dad’s dream of being an actor & using his Bollywood contacts (Abhishek kapoor is the cousin of Ekta kapoor), Abhishek got his first break as a main lead actor. But the real story starts now, Abhishek kapoor's debut movie UFF YEH MOHABBAT against twinkle khanna (also his real life love interest than) got released in 1996 and it bombed at box office so miserably that it was tagged as the most disastrous movie of that year. Abhishek kapoor was panned by many critics’ as a hero with militarian looks and wooden expressions. A very bad launch of his career has brought him under a trauma; he got parted away from twinkle khanna. However there were some directors who dared to cast him in some of their movies, but the result was the same, they all fall flat right on their face at box office.

Abhishek cuts all his contacts from his friends and families; he was in dark zone for almost a year. He was not in touch even with his wife. He was jobless for more than 4 years. It was a tough time for him, and it was this time which makes him realize that how much one has to rely on his own dreams rather than trying to live up to others expectations. His Family was running under financial crashes at last he tried his hand in assisting some of the very well-known directors than, but nothing materialize well. It was this time which inspires him to write his first script. A story about jobless wrestler who despite all his social and financial problems achieves what he desires in his life. Movie was titled ARYAN. But again it was a task to find the producers to back the Abhishek's dream. After struggling for years he got Vipul anand on board to back his project. Abhishek was back in the market but with a very tight budget to prove his caliber now. His first debut movie ARYAN made on a very tight budget with no star value was ready to release, but with not so well known star cast (sohail khan & sneha ullal) ARYAN never found a buyers, after hiatus of long 1 and half years, movie finally got released in some theaters, and as expected it marked the lowest opening in box office that year. Though a very well made film ARYAN was one of the biggest flops of 2006 commercially. However it was well received by the critics. Abhishek's ability as a director was evident in every frame of the movie. Though flop in 2006, nowadays ARYAN is considered as Sohail khan's careers best movie till date. In 2008 Crossword has reported that the demand of DVD’s for ARYAN has increased phenomenally, & by the end of 2011 producers has earned a whopping 5 - 7 crore just by the sales of DVD's.

After the release of ARYAN, Abhishek was well known by the insiders as a genuine director by now, however he was looking for the real fame which can justify his talent. He started working on his second script, a story about four friends and there second chance to live there dreams. This time it was EXCEL ENTERTAINMENT headed by Abhishek's school buddies (farhan akhtar & ritesh siddhwani) to support his friend to live up his dream. It was a project of experiment called ROCK ON!! Made on a very restrain budget and a strong premise, the first Promo of ROCK ON!! went on air in the monsoons of 2008. And with the very first promo, it was visible that farhan & Abhishek has winners in their hand. ROCK ON!! Released with minimum expectations and was proved out as the biggest surprise hit of 2008. It hits the nation and band lovers like a storm. With ROCK ON Abhishek has shown a new angle of bromance to Bollywood, it was a breakthrough movie, a real trendsetter. Farhan akhtar who till now was just known for his directorial ability, has shown his talent and brilliancy as an actor and singer, a true rockstar. ROCK ON met with the both critical and commercial success. And is now consider as a cult movie in the genre of bromance. Abhishek was riding high with ROCK ON!! As movie was rewarded with the most prestigious National and Fimfare award. Finally Abhishek got what he desired in his life.

After the humongous success of ROCK ON, Abhishek got flooded with the offers from well-known producers to direct their movies, but being a man of its own terms Abhishek has rejected all the offers, he also refuses to direct his cousin Ekta kapoor’s movie. Meanwhile Farhan who gave Abhishek his first dream breakthrough was ready with the final draft for the sequel of ROCK ON!! script was written by him own which he wanted to be directed by Abhishek. However Abhishek who has already rejected many offers from the big production houses of industry, has not shown much interest in Farhan’s project too, which eventually turned up as a reason for tiff between best buddies farhan & Abhishek (Its rumored that the basic premise of the draft written by farhan was afterwards used by his sister Zoya and she made Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara out of it which was a big hit).

Against the norms of film industry and rejecting offers of almost all the big production houses, Abhishek was ready to write his own script, he wanted to live up the bromance once again. He wanted to recreate the same euphoria that was created at the time of ROCK ON!! Instead of going with a mega budget and star studded venture, Abhishek opted to go for an average budget movie with a very strong script & instead of casting big stars he chooses to cast new talents. He spent his valuable 2 years in just writing the script and finalizing the leads for his next venture which was based on very popular Indian novel 3 mistakes of my life written by Chetan Bhagat. Finally he begin the shooting & as per the demand of the script Abhishek shoots much part of the movie in a very crowded pols of Ahmedabad for constant 4 months & that too in a skin scratching summers of 2011. Movie was titled KAI PO CHE!! Again with the very first promo launch of KAI PO CHE!! It was visible that Abhishek has done no mistake in taking his own time to make this film. Promos and songs of the movie (music: Amit trivedi) became a viral hit. And was buzzed as one of the most awaited movies of 2013. And Abhishek has one more time proved that it’s the premise of the movie which attracts the people and not the big budget. However after creating an initial buzz it’s now to see that how much KAI PO CHE!! Lives up to our expectations.

Will Abhishek be able to hit the home run again with KAI PO CHE!!? Will he shuts the mouth of big production houses by delivering a hit again in a very constraint budget? Will he be able to do the complete justice to the talent of new cast?

Matter not with the results of Kai Po che!! Abhishek has already won the hearts of many like me with his really inspiring success story. His journey is very well depicted in one of the songs of Kai Po Che!!

Roothe khaabon ko mana lenge, Kati patango ko thaamenge
Haa haa hai jazba, Ho ho hai jazba
Suljha lenge uljhe rishton ka manjha

Soyi taqdeere jaga denge, Kal ko ambar jhuka denge
Haa haa, hai jazba, Ho ho, hai jazba
Suljha lenge uljhe rishton ka manjha

TAKE A BOW SIR!!
